I hold a zero dollar or volunteer appointment, or emeritus status with UW-Madison– am I required to take the training?
At this time, only employees who receive a paycheck from the university are required to complete the training. However, if you have regular contact with our students and employees within your role (e.g., externship supervisor, mentor, etc.), we highly recommend that you complete the training so that you are familiar with our campus policies and resources.
How do I complete the training requirement?

Completion data will be provided to the Office of Compliance, Deans and Directors, and the Title IX Coordinator on a regular basis to ensure the campus is meeting its training obligation in this area.
What happens if I don’t complete the training?
Employees who do not complete the training will not be eligible for general wage adjustments or performance pay increases.
What if an employee I supervise does not complete the training?
Policy language endorsed by the Campus Advisory Group on Sexual Assault and Misconduct states that supervisors are responsible for ensuring their employees complete the training. Supervisors will not be eligible for general wage adjustments or performance pay increases if employees in their responsibility areas do not complete the training unless efforts to obtain their supervisee’s compliance without success are documented. This policy is currently under review.
What can I do if I find the training content to be triggering for me?
Employees who find this content to be triggering can schedule an individual meeting with Employee Assistance Office (EAO) for an alternative training. EAO was selected to offer this training as they are a confidential resource on all employee matters. Employees do not need to provide any reason for requesting the EAO training, they simply need to make the appointment. The alternative training will focus primarily on resources available to employees and ways to report sexual harassment and sexual violence. This option is provided to sensitively balance the expectation that all employees receive training on this important topic with the personal experience an employee may have.

Description
Responsible Employees have a duty to report to the Title IX Coordinator any information they receive that suggests a violation of the UW-Madison Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence has occurred or is occurring. They are not allowed to keep confidential information reported to them suggesting such a violation has occurred or is occurring. These employees are required to:
- Be familiar with the definitions of sexual harassment and sexual violence;
- Be familiar with this and other related policies;
- Be familiar with confidential and other resources on campus and in the community to which to refer a reporting individual;
- Be familiar with the duty to report information they receive about potential acts of sexual harassment or sexual violence to the Title IX Coordinator and be prepared to explain this duty to anyone who is considering reporting such information to them.
Who Needs to Complete This Training?
People designated as “Responsible Employees” are in positions where they are seen as trusted representatives of the university. Please contact your HR representative for specifics if you have further questions. Additional information about the expectations of Responsible Employees can be found in the UW-Madison Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the deadline for this training?
Please take the training as soon as possible after receiving notification from the Sexual Misconduct Resource and Response Program. The training will take approximately 15-minutes to complete and you will be required to take the training on an annual basis. You will continue to receive notifications until you are in compliance with the annual training requirement.
Is this the same as the Sexual Harassment training I’ve already taken?
No. Prevent Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence at UW-Madison is a separate training that is required of all employees every four years. The Responsible Employee training is only required of designated “Responsible Employees” and it is an annual requirement.
How do my reporting requirements as a Responsible Employee compare to my other reporting requirements on campus?
This chart can help you understand that various reporting requirements you may have on campus.
As a Responsible Employee, Do I have an obligation to report when only one of the individuals involved is associated with campus?
You should report anything related to our campus activities, services, students, or employees regardless of if it occurs on or off campus
Do my reporting obligations change if I know of the incident via the victim or the aggressor/perpetrator?
Please report relevant information regardless of how you learned about the potential misconduct. Please note that you may also learn about an incident from a third party.
Should I report if the involved parties work for the state but not UW-Madison?
If none of the involved parties are affiliated with campus and if the behavior in question did not take place on campus, you are not required to report. However if you would like to report, we can help connect you with the appropriate individual within that agency or to law enforcement.
Should I report if the involved parties are part of the UW System but not UW-Madison?
If one or more of the involved parties is involved with any part of the UW System, please report.
Online Training Troubleshooting
When I try to complete the training, it says I’m already registered but I can’t figure out how to review the content.
Since you are already registered, you can complete the course by going to “my.wisc.edu” and searching for “Canvas” – this should bring you to a link that will allow you to access your courses in the Canvas learning management system. Click on this year’s Responsible Employee training to get started.
I have completed the quiz successfully, but I keep getting notifications that I’m not in compliance.
In order to be in compliance, you must complete both the full training module, and successfully complete the quiz.
I reviewed the training module and completed the quiz – Why am I still receiving notifications?
Remember, the online training is required every year – so you will get reminders on an annual basis. If you have completed the training within the past year and still have not been marked “complete,” it may be that you reset the training module by restarting it after you finished once. If you think this is the case, please contact TitleIX_Coordinator@wisc.edu and explain the problem.
