General Training Requirement
As required by HIPAA and University policy, the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides online HIPAA compliance training.
To be considered compliant with our HIPAA training requirement, all faculty, staff, students, and volunteers who work in areas that have access to Protected Health Information, or who support areas that have access to this information must complete the most recent version of the HIPAA training course by the date that it is due — even if they don’t work directly with Protected Health Information (PHI) on a daily basis. This is because these areas may have incidental contact with PHI or encounter HIPAA violations, and are required to know how to respond appropriately in such situations. A new HIPAA training course is released approximately annually.
Failure to complete UW-Madison’s HIPAA training by the required due date may result in the loss of system access until training is completed, removal from courses or clinical rotations, and/or discipline as determined by appropriate leadership in consultation with the Office of Compliance.
HIPAA TRAINING FOR EMPLOYEES, STAFF, AND STUDENTS WITH UW-MADISON NetIDs (Academic Year 2024-25 Annual Training due 12/01/24): If you are a member of the UW-Madison campus and belong to a unit of our HIPAA-covered Health Care Component (HCC), you will be automatically enrolled in our HIPAA training upon association with the UW HCC (either by UDDS code via HR processes or an academic program code via data provided by our Registrar). To access the HIPAA training course directly in Canvas, visit HIPAA Privacy and Security Training. If the training course does not appear in Canvas for you, contact your HIPAA Privacy Coordinator to request enrollment.
*UW-Madison Employees, staff, and students with NetIDs are required to complete this training. Contact Mitchell Sabez to be enrolled if the training does not appear in your Canvas account.
*To verify completion of your HIPAA training, use the VCRGE Lookup Tool (requires multi-factor authentication).
HIPAA TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS, EXTERNAL RESEARCH COLLABORATORS, BUSINESS ASSOCIATES, VISITING STUDENTS/INTERNS: If you are external to UW-Madison and need to complete our HIPAA training, please access a “public-facing” PDF of our training by visiting HIPAA External Training. At the end of the PDF you will be directed to complete a training attestation to serve as verification of completion of the training; it will be emailed to you for your records at the email address of your choice. You are responsible for forwarding that verification to members of the UW-Madison community who need to verify your completion of our training.
*Please be aware, HIPAA External Training cannot be looked-up in the VCRGE Lookup Tool.
*If you encounter difficulty completing HIPAA External Training or have any questions, please contact Mitchell Sabez.
